A motorhome trip through the Mecklenburg Lake District

The canoe centre rents canoes, kayaks and SUPs, and there is also the Havelberge marina. Leave the motorhome at the campsite and spend the day on the water. Mirow Castle adds a visit to baroque interiors to this part of the trip.

Mirow Castle: a modest façade and a baroque hall

Mirow Castle was built from around 1709 as a residence for Duchess Christiane Aemilie Anthonie of Mecklenburg-Strelitz after her husband’s death. Its exterior is understated, while the high-Baroque hall inside stands out for its stucco work by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Clerici. Other rooms were remodelled in the Friderician Rococo style during the 18th century.

Take the B 198 to the castle island. Paid visitor parking is available at the entrance, and the visitor service lists train and bus connections from Neustrelitz. If you are arriving in a long motorhome, ask the visitor service about parking first. The website gives no vehicle dimensions.

Waren and Ecktannen: a town by the water

In Waren, renovated half-timbered houses in the old town reach down to the Müritz. The harbour is a lively spot by the water, and boat trips run across the connected lakes. Explore the old town and its surroundings on foot or by bike.

CampingPlatz Ecktannen sits beside the Müritz at the entrance to Müritz National Park. Motorhomes can use a separate pitch outside the barrier or other areas inside the campsite. For the outside pitch, the operator lists a 16-amp CEE connection, fresh water, shower and WC, and waste disposal. That connection is not for charging electric cars. According to the operator, Waren’s old town is about 3.5 kilometres away.

Natural history and aquariums at the Müritzeum

At Lake Herrensee, the Müritzeum pairs a natural-history exhibition with a large aquarium for native freshwater fish. The deep tank shows schools of fish moving through dim water, while exhibits on forests, birds and wetlands add context to the lake landscape. After the museum, continue the visit with a walk through the garden around Herrensee.

Taking a motorhome to Müritz National Park

Before driving into Müritz National Park, choose an official entrance and a marked place to park. The park has few roads. Many are narrow or only partly developed, and some roads are for local residents only. In a motorhome, use marked parking or motorhome spaces as your starting point, then continue on foot or by bike.

The official map shows entrance areas, car parks, routes and observation points. It warns that OpenStreetMap background data can be inaccurate, so use the park authority’s marked information when planning your approach. The seasonal information centre in Federow lies seven kilometres southeast of Waren. Its exhibition and ranger advice can help you choose a route or a wildlife-viewing point.

Overnight stays in Müritz National Park

Camping and setting up a motorhome overnight in Müritz National Park are permitted only at the existing official tent sites. The park authority marks these places on its hiking, cycling and waterway maps. Since a tent site is not automatically suitable for every motorhome, check with its operator before you arrive.
