Castel dell'Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples, Italy, situated on the islet of Megaride in the Gulf of Naples. Originally built as a Roman villa by consul Lucio Licinio Lucullo in the 1st century BC, it later became a fortress and served as the prison of the last Western Roman Emperor Romolo Augusto in 476 AD.
