The Acropolis of Mystras crowns the hill of the Byzantine castle-town of Mystras in the Peloponnese, in the municipality of Sparta. Built by William II of Villehardouin, it is a medieval castle complex with a double line of defense: two fortified enclosures reinforced by square and cylindrical towers, an arched gateway guarded by a large square tower, soldiers' quarters, a large cistern, a small twin chapel, and what is thought to have been the garrison commander's residence.
