Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous border crossing between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Located on Friedrichstraße in the heart of the city, it became the scene of the most dangerous confrontation between American and Soviet tanks in October 1961, when both sides faced each other with live ammunition and the world came close to a third world war.
